Helping our body remove toxins is essential for health in later years of life. The sooner you start, the healthier you will be in later life. Toxin removal should be an ongoing process otherwise life will be full of exhaustion, pain, headaches, water retention, and other problems that come from too many toxins in the body.
Today our way of life is especially prone to toxin buildup and we must help our bodies detoxify.
When your body is full of toxins, you will find it hard to digest certain foods, you will have difficulty absorbing nutrients from foods and you will have reduced conversion of foods to energy. This is why the feeling of exhaustion is the first sign of toxin build-up. Hormonal imbalances are also very common with toxin build up as well as skin rashes.
Often times, the detoxification process can be overwhelming for many people because it is seen as a one-off activity. But it should not be. This is why I recommend a healthy detox with the right nutrition as an ongoing health supporting activity.
However, at specific times in your life, you may need extra support for your body in the removal of toxins, especially when you feel exhausted and have gut, skin, liver, or kidney problems including nighttime urination.
So let’s look at the most useful and common nutrients, as well as the foods and herbs and where you can find them, that will help your body in the removal of toxins.
Detoxification for your Liver
The liver is one of the most important organs to detox in the body. The liver neutralizes the toxins that remain in your body.
Choline, an essential nutrient that you need to get from your diet, milk thistle, and inositol, a B vitamin, are the best natural remedies to support the liver to detoxify. The herb milk thistle has been used as a remedy for liver problems for hundreds of years. Inositol and Choline are vitamins that help your body break down fats and can also help prevent liver disease. You can take them as supplements or in foods such as peanuts, or spinach, beets, whole-wheat, which are sources of the choline metabolite, betaine.
Detoxification for your Bowel
The bowel is another of the most important organs to detox in the body because the bowel helps the body rid toxins. Probiotics are ‘friendly’ bacteria used to help the bowel to flush out toxins from the body. Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium are the most important bacterial strains to support the detox process, but using a supplement with more strains and in large amounts is always better. I recommend taking a supplement with at least 10 strains of bacteria and as many colony-forming units, you can find on the market. Generally, 100 billion CFU’s is enough to support a healthy microbiome necessary for the detoxification of the gut. A regular high fiber diet is also essential for the consistent removal of toxins from the body.
Detoxification for your Kidneys
The kidneys process about 200 liters of blood a day, getting rid of excess water and other waste products and toxins. When the kidneys cannot do their job properly, you will have a buildup of toxins and waste in the kidneys which may also lead to painful kidney stones.
There are certain foods that support the kidneys in their job of cleaning out toxins and these include Kidney beans, which funnily enough look like our kidneys in color and shape. They help remove toxins from the kidneys and help flush out kidney stones.
During the months of September – November pomegranates are in season. They are very useful in removing toxins via the kidneys and removing kidney stones. Pomegranates and their juice also have antiseptic properties, and are rich in fiber and also support the liver.
Lemons are in season during the winter months. Freshly squeezed lemon juice also helps filter the blood and remove toxins from the body. I recommend drinking juice from a freshly squeezed lemon 4-5 times a week first thing in the morning.
Early spring is celery season. Celery is a very effective liver and kidney tonic. It also supports toxin removal and is rich in fiber.
In the spring, basil leaves are in season. They lower the level of uric acid in blood and improve kidney function. Basil is also effective in breaking down kidney stones for easier removal.
June is beet season. Beets and beet juices contain Betaine which reduces kidney stone formation.
In the summer months, watermelon hydrates and cleanses the kidneys and prevents kidney stone formation and stimulates bile production reducing the amount of waste reaching the kidneys and supporting the health of the liver.
Apples are in season from August to November and are especially helpful in supporting the liver and kidney function.
Detoxification for your Skin
The skin is the largest eliminative organ. The skin removes approximately one-third of the body’s waste products and is known as “the third kidney” by Chinese doctors because the skin also cleanses the blood.
Sweat analysis shows that sweat has a similar constitution as the urine. If the skin becomes inactive due to clogged pores filled with dead cells, it will not remove toxins efficiently. The other eliminative organs (liver, bowel and kidneys) will, as a result, have to increase their workload and may become overworked and weary. Therefore, there is great importance in keeping the skin in a healthy working condition. This is why I recommend scrubbing your skin to ensure its health.
In addition to the skin’s eliminative work, the body actually breathes through the skin, therefore Chinese doctors also refer to the skin as “the third lung”. The Scrub massage will give the skin stimulation, exercise, and cleansing of which it is deprived by the modern sedentary way of life so that it can recommence its crucial functions in supporting health.
One way to scrub is by doing so right after exercising.
After exercising, wipe the body from excess sweat to prevent toxin reabsorption and go to the shower where you may begin the Scrub. Under the shower water, use a natural fiber brush to scrub the body in circular motions to support the removal of toxins and old skin cells that clog up the sweat glands. Massage every part of the body except the face. The sensitivity of the skin will decline once your skin gets used to the procedure. When you scrub each section of the body, you will notice that you tense those muscles in the area you are scrubbing; therefore, the scrub is also a strength stimulant.
Brush gently until the skin turns red, but be careful not to harm the skin by overdoing it.
Nutrients That Support The Flushing Out of Toxins
Zinc and Magnesium are the best minerals that clean toxins from the cells. Magnesium improves cellular activity and helps release toxins into the bloodstream. Zinc is an antioxidant that helps to destroy ‘free radicals’ and remove heavy metals from the body.
Vitamins C and E can also help to reduce toxin levels in the body and the liver. Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant and improves levels of glutathione, which neutralizes toxins in the liver. Vitamin E is fat-soluble and works against free radicals in fat cells.
But make sure you do not get your nutrients out of balance by taking one specific nutrient too often. For example, if you take zinc supplementation regularly, it will reduce your iron levels and vice versa. This is why I recommend choosing either food supplements, meaning that you supplement with superfoods, or get personal support for your nutrient necessities by an expert in the field. An expert will examine your blood test results and dietary habits for any nutritional imbalances and deficiencies. I recommend this, especially if you are not feeling at your best. If you are interested in such support, I offer a health plan, including a supplement recommendation based on your current health situation. You can check it out at www.TheGuerrillaDiet.com/menu for only $49 because I care about you and want to help as many people as possible reach their ideal health, so we can improve happiness in the world.
To summarize, detoxification should be an ongoing process making sure you are consuming foods that are best for cleansing toxins from the body on a regular basis. Supplementation and specific herbs and consuming detoxifying foods during their season of growth are also very effective for supporting the detoxifying organs. A regular body scrub is also a cheap and very efficient way to keep your body functioning at its best.
