German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche said it perfectly: “He who has a WHY, can endure any HOW”
Losing weight is no easy task. But once you have a good enough reason to lose weight, the whole process becomes a whole lot easier. By having a strong “Why” you will be tapping into your hidden reserves of energy, determination and courage that you may not even know you have. Your mission becomes clear and the goal before you becomes compelling. You become unstoppable!
Obesity is the second leading cause of death after smoking. It is associated with an increased mortality rate of all ages including children. More than 2 billion adults worldwide are overweight and obese. When you carry more weight than you should, losing weight is not an issue you can afford to procrastinate, in this article I will give you a few reasons of how to transform your goal of weight loss into something that is irresistible for you.
Reason #1 To Lose Weight
Diabetes: It is well known that 80 – 90% of type II diabetes patients are overweight. Diabetes is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and research shows that having diabetes at least doubles a person’s risk of death. Diabetes is also the leading cause of adult blindness in the world.
Type II diabetes occurs because cells fail to respond to insulin adequately or the body fails to produce sufficient insulin to remove the excess blood glucose. This will happen after straining insulin production for some time caused by excessive body weight and not enough exercise.
Diabetes leads to many health complications related to damage of blood vessels including heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Diabetes is no fun, and losing weight drastically reduces the risk of suffering from this debilitating disease.
Reason #2 To Lose Weight
Vascular diseases: Obesity is also associated with atherosclerosis, a thickening & hardening of the walls of arteries caused by the buildup of fatty deposits, cholesterol, and other substances on the inside of artery walls throughout the body. This narrows the arteries slowing blood flow and increasing the risk of blood clotting. Arteries at risk include those supplying blood to the brain and the heart. If clotting occurs in the brain due to a narrowed artery, it may block blood supply to an area of the brain resulting in stroke (CVA). If clotting occurs due to a narrowed coronary (heart) artery, it blocks blood supply to an area of the heart resulting in a heart attack (MI). Losing weight reduces both of these risks dramatically.
Reason #3 To Lose Weight
The connection between being overweight and cancer is due to the fact that specific stores of body fat (visceral fat) are biologically active and function like endocrine organs. These fat cells release pro-inflammatory cytokines (immune proteins) which support the development of tumors as well as inflammation, heart disease, type II diabetes, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s and premature aging.
In addition, fat cells tend to keep cancer-causing agents, trapped in the body because fat cells also work as storage compartments for these toxins so that they will not harm other tissues. However, there are times when these toxins are re-released into the bloodstream inducing inflammation and increasing the chances of developing cancer.
Obesity especially raises the risk of suffering from these types of cancers:
- Breast cancer – affecting breast tissue of both men and women.
- Colorectal cancer – affecting colon and rectum.
- Prostrate cancer – affecting the prostate gland of men.
- Endometrial cancer – affecting the uterus.
- Esophageal cancer – affecting the esophagus.
- Renal cell cancer, cancer of the kidney.
Reason #4 To Lose Weight
Respiratory diseases: The presence of fatty tissue around the rib cage, abdomen and in the visceral cavity fills the chest wall and reduces the functional residual capacity (volume of air present in the lungs at the end of passive expiration). The chest wall becomes heavier to lift due to added fat tissue in the process of breathing in.
The most common respiratory problem is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition where an individual stops breathing for some time while asleep. During sleep, when throat and tongue muscles are more relaxed, soft tissue in the throat collapses around the airway due to the excess weight blocking it. This causes the airway to become blocked. For the severely obese, sleep apnea may get more complicated with hypoventilation. Hypoventilation is an accumulation of toxic levels of carbon dioxide (the gas we breathe out) in the blood, due to inadequate breathing. Losing weight would be the only permanent safe and healthy solution to sleep apnea.
Reason #5 To Lose Weight
Urinary Incontinence: This is the involuntary release of urine. Being overweight can contribute to urinary incontinence. The extra weight carried around a person’s abdominal area due to massive body fat deposits may cause excess stress and pressure on to the muscles of the pelvic floor. This leads to stretching and weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. This results in leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing or laughing. It can even result in bed wetting at night. This particular problem can be a very effective motivator to lose weight.
Reason #6 To Lose Weight
Varicose veins: Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and twisted, most common in the superficial veins of the legs. Leg and thigh muscles assist the heart in blood circulation. Leg muscles put pressure on the veins to return blood to the heart, against the effects of gravity. To support them with this task, these veins have pairs of valves to prevent blood from flowing backward. Pressure as a result of a large abdomen increases the workload on the valves eventually causing damage and the valves no longer function properly. Damaged valves then allow the blood to flow backward, due to gravity, creating high pressure in these veins leading to swelling, thickening of skin and skin ulcers.
Besides being a cosmetic problem, varicose veins can be painful, especially when standing.
Reason #7 To Lose Weight
High Blood Pressure: One’s BMI (Body Mass Index) and age together are the most strong indicators of risk of hypertension (high blood pressure). At least a third of all hypertension cases are related to weight gain. Hypertension sustained over time is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, aortic aneurysm, peripheral artery disease, and chronic kidney disease.
Reasons #8 – #18 To Lose Weight
Other Diseases: Other diseases which may occur as a result of being overweight include:
-
-
-
- Gout – Obesity is an independent risk factor for gout and is associated with earlier age of onset.
- Lower back pains – When excess weight is carried, the spine is forced to take on the burden leading to structural changes and damage.
- Osteoarthritis – due to exposure of cytokines released from visceral fat tissue which promotes inflammation, the chronic inflammation damages the joints.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis – same as in osteoarthritis
- Gallstones – Small, hard crystalline masses formed abnormally in the gallbladder. Gallstones may cause severe pain and blockage of the bile duct. The prevalence of gallstones is increased in overweight people mostly due to saturation of bile with cholesterol. Bile aids the digestion of fats and is produced by the liver and stored and concentrated in the gallbladder. People who are overweight will have more cholesterol in their bile. The more cholesterol you have in your bile, the more likely it is to form gallstones.
- Pregnancy disorders such as Neural tube defect, Prenatal mortality, Maternal hypertension, Gestational diabetes, etc. – Obesity increases birth defect risk. Babies born to obese women were found to be twice as likely to have neural tube defect than women who were not overweight, even though obese moms were just as likely to take folic acid supplements during pregnancy. So if not for your own sake, maybe for your baby’s sake.
- Impaired immune response – Being overweight or obese has been shown to damages the body’s ability to mount a protective immune response to the influenza virus.
- Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver disease – A broad spectrum of liver diseases ranging from fatty liver (accumulation of fat in the liver) to cirrhosis (advanced irreversible scarring of the liver as a result of chronic inflammation). The whole spectrum of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases is now believed to be due to insulin resistance, a condition closely associated with being overweight. In fact, studies show that a person’s BMI correlates with the degree of liver damage. The higher the BMI, the greater the liver damage.
- Pancreatitis – An inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is a large gland behind the stomach responsible for producing digestive enzymes and insulin and glucagon. The symptoms of pancreatitis include severe pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, and vomiting. Fat within the pancreas has been shown to increase with BMI. The more overweight the individual, the more fatty tissue they will have in their pancreas leading to chronic inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) and fat clogging up the pancreas not allowing normal insulin secretion. This situation leads to type II diabetes and predisposes to pancreatic cancer, a challenging cancer to treat.
- Bad body odor
- Depression – The connection is two way. Overweight persons have a 55% increased risk of developing depression over time, and depressed persons have a 58% increased risk of becoming obese.
-
-
Research shows that even modest weight loss of even 10 pounds for an overweight individual significantly reduces the risk of developing these diseases and disorders.
Reason #19 To Lose Weight
Your relationships will improve: When you are healthy and at your ideal weight and feeling good, your relationship with yourself will be better and, as a result, your other will relationships will be happier and more enjoyable. Your sex life will improve as well and you will feel better with yourself as your self esteem rises. The quality of your relationships determines the quality of your life.
Reason #20 To Lose Weight

Reason #21 To Lose Weight
You will live a longer life in good health. Scientists from Boston University found that the risk of mortality increases with higher BMIs. With the lowest risk category within the BMI range of 20 to 22. They found that the risk for death increases consistently as BMI goes up. So if you lose weight, you will be more likely to see your grandchildren grow up and perhaps even marry, you will have a wealth of joyous experiences on earth and will be happier.
